It’s a question I get a lot – what should baby wear for newborn photos? If you’ve never had newborn photos taken before, it can be hard to know what looks best. So today I compiled a list of outfit ideas to give you inspiration! In general, I recommend two outfits. We usually do one swaddled look, and one other outfit. The other outfit is often a onesie. If you choose me as your Northern Virginia newborn photographer, I have plenty of white swaddles to use during your session! I choose white because it will give your photos a simple, timeless look. When you view the photos in 10, 20, 30 years, you won’t see any trends – just your adorable baby. White swaddles also allow baby’s features to stand out – especially those little hands, tiny toes, and button nose. The swaddles are available at my photography studio for newborn photos, or I can bring the swaddles to you for an in-home newborn photo session. I serve clients all over Northern Virginia, Washington, DC, and Maryland, and I would love to come out to you!
I also have tiny little diaper covers! I use these with my swaddle. Sometimes we can capture a few shots with just baby in the diaper + cover for a really simple, natural look. If you want to also get white diapers, I recommend Honest and Coterie Diapers – but it’s not required! The cover does a great job of hiding prints.
I also have simple white onesies available to my clients for studio and in-home sessions! I try to make things as easy as possible so you don’t have to worry about it. If you prefer to use your own outfit, that’s also fine! Here are some guidelines when picking it out:
If you’re looking for something a little cozier for the second outfit, knit or waffle onesies, or knit sweaters can be a great option!
If you choose the studio, I will have an assortment of bows for you to choose from. Most colors are neutral with a few soft pops of color such as dusty blue, blush, and mauve. If you are doing an in-home session, you’ll need to have your own bows. I highly recommend bows from Ivory Grey Design. They are simple, gorgeous, and most importantly let baby still be the star of the photos. Mostly, you’ll want to avoid very large bows. While they can be adorable, they will take up most of the photo and be the main feature (instead of your adorable little baby). It’s also hard to know how they’ll fit since we won’t know how big baby is until baby is here. Going with something small and simple will always be the timeless choice!
