Film Newborn Photographer | Studio Photos
As a film newborn photographer in Northern Virginia, I adore when clients add on film photography to their session. It’s a beautiful, timeless medium that really brings your portrait session to life in a unique, artistic way. I added analog film photography to my business seven years ago, and it was the best thing I ever did! I often get clients asking “what is film photography?” So I’m sharing a little more here!
What is film photography?
Film photography is when I use old school rolls of film, insert them into my film camera, and take your photos. I use medium format film, so we get 16 shots per roll. Then after I take those 16 photos, I have to change the roll of film out and put a new roll in. After your session, I mail the film rolls to my lab (I adore PhotoVision and have been using them for many years). They process and develop the film, then send the photos back to me as film scans. These are basically digital images, but they are fully developed and I do barely any editing at all. They’re essentially all done, ready to go as a beautiful and unique work of art!
When you add on film photography to your session, I also shoot with my digital camera. This gives me both a backup (any time you mail film there is a tiny risk something could happen in the mail), and allows me to capture more photos quickly. This can be extra helpful when working with little ones, like fast toddlers. My digital camera also performs better in lower light situations, so I like to have both options available at your session. This newborn session was taken on both film and digital. It took place at my natural light newborn photography studio in Northern Virginia (Sterling, to be exact!) As an artist, I love the intention behind each film photo. Since we have limited exposures, I’m extra careful with each one. Each final photo is a unique work of art.
