Home maternity photos can be a beautiful way to document your pregnancy. There’s something uniquely special about capturing this fleeting chapter right where your family story is unfolding—in your own home. As a Northern Virginia maternity photographer, I love offering in-home maternity sessions, along with my studio or outdoor sessions in the area. Here are three reason you may consider home maternity photos!
Your home isn’t just a backdrop—it’s one of your family’s most meaningful places. From your positive pregnancy test to carefully curating the nursery and all the moments in between, you’ll always remember those special days in your home as you get ready to welcome baby. Why not take maternity photos in that very same place?
If your nursery is set up, some moms love to take photos there! If you’re also doing an in-home newborn session, it will be so sweet to have similar photos of your bump, and then baby in your arms. Years later, these photos will transport you back to the entire feeling of this precious time in your family’s story.

Sometimes staying home is just easier! You don’t have to pack bags or bring anything with you. As you can imagine, this is extra helpful if you already have children! And you don’t have to worry about getting everyone in and out of the car or dealing with traffic.
When you have other children already, they may feel more comfortable in their own space. Having snacks and toys nearby – and the option to go play once we’re done with their photos – can also make everything a little easier!

If you want a mix of indoor and outdoor photos, your home may be a great way to get both in one session! Depending on the season, we can take photos in your backyard where you all love to play. Or on the front porch where you enjoy spending time as a family. Or even walking around your neighborhood! In the winter, we sometimes can step outside for a few photos as well. I don’t normally do outdoor winter sessions between mid-November to mid-March (it’s often just too cold and unpredictable here in Northern Virginia), but for in-home sessions it’s really easy to step outside for just a few minutes!
When planning any in-home session, it’s really important for me to have an understanding of the light in your home! In your planning questionnaire (or during your styling appointment), we’ll discuss which rooms you’re considering, and what time of day those rooms get the best light. We often take photos in the late morning or early afternoon, although sometimes we do switch to an earlier morning session or a later afternoon session if we also want outdoor photos. I’ll guide you in all of this, so you don’t have to worry about a thing!
