5 Makeup Tips for Family Photos

Looking for makeup tips for your next family photo session? This blog post is for you! While you want to enhance your features, the key is finding the right balance between looking polished and still feeling like yourself. After all, you still want to look like YOU!

Here are five makeup tips to help you look fantastic in your next family photo session while still looking natural and beautiful.

Hire a professional makeup artist

This is always my top tip! Having your makeup done professionally not only helps you look and feel your best, it also gives your photos a beautiful, polished finish. You can ask for a natural look so you still feel like YOU, only with your natural beauty elevated. A professional makeup artist will be able to blend a shade to match your complexion flawlessly and know how to highlight your best features.

A couple other reasons to consider hiring a professional:

You can be confident your makeup will last without caking, smudging, or disappearing in a couple of hours by the time you arrive at your session. It also helps you feel less stressed and rushed – which is huge when getting ready for family photos! You’ll likely be coordinating outfits, managing family members, and handling last-minute details. Having a professional take care of your makeup eliminates one major source of stress and ensures you’ll feel confident about your appearance.

You can plan ahead and have makeup done in the morning before you have to get dressed and ready, taking one big step off your plate. Many makeup artists come straight to your home, making it super easy to fit this in and let’s be honest. It’s also lovely being pampered once in a while!

After booking, all of my clients get a list of my top favorite makeup artists in the area to make this step easy. Most of them I have used personally for my own photos, so you’ll know you’re in good hands!

2. Choose classic, timeless makeup rather than trending looks

As always, I recommend timeless over anything trendy. When looking back you don’t want your makeup to be the focus of the photos. Instead, you want it to elevate your natural beauty while letting your emotion and love shine through for your family.

3. If you’re doing makeup on your own, do a test run ahead of time

This ensures you don’t feel rushed or stressed on session day as you know exactly how you want to look. You can even take some selfies in natural light near a window to see how it photographs!

4. Bring makeup with you for any final touchups

Pack blotting papers and your lip color for quick touch-ups at your session.  Bring them with in a small bag so we don’t have to carry around too much.

5. Maintain your brows so you look your best

This is one of those small details, but it can make a big difference in having a polished look. Plan to have this done ahead of time so you don’t feel rushed in the days leading up to your session.

One final tip: if you hire a professional, double check their reschedule policy, especially if you have an outdoor session. Let me know if you need to reschedule a certain amount of time before your appointment (i.e. 24 or 48 hours) so we can coordinate that in the event of rain!

With these tips, you’ll look polished and natural in your family photos while still feeling like yourself. The best photos happen when you’re comfortable and confident, so choose your look ahead of time and then relax and enjoy making memories with your loved ones.
