How to Prepare for In-Home Photos | Portrait Tips

Thank you for inviting me into your home! I can’t wait to document your family in your favorite place. Here are 3 tips to prepare for your in-home portrait session.

1. A little tidying and organizing goes a long way.

Picking up in the spaces we’ll most likely be using is the simplest way to make the most of our time together. There’s no need to clean the whole house, I promise! We likely have already discussed the main areas that get the most natural light. Focus on those rooms and do the following: pick up clutter, hide cords or remove items with cords that you don’t need, clear off nightstands in rooms we might use, remove extra toys, blankets, or objects you don’t want in the photos.

2. Open the blinds and curtains before I arrive.

We want all the natural light in your photos. Having this done ahead of time saves time and allows me to choose which rooms to start in right away.

3. Let your kids lead the way during the session.

Letting your kids simply be kids is the best way to get those moments that make you feel. In a location that’s so familiar to them, we’re likely to uncover more silly, free, and joyful moments earlier in the session. Embracing these moments instead of worrying about the “perfect” shot is always the way to go. I’m there to document your family exactly as you are, in a space you love. Of course I’ll provide posing guidance and instructions to help you look your best. But we’ll also go with the flow as much as possible!
