Are you wondering about the best time for spring family photos in Northern Virginia and Washington, DC? There are so many gorgeous flowers blooming this time of year. It truly is magical! I’ve been a photographer for nearly 10 years in this area, and every year I’m blown away by the beauty. Although you can usually find flowers throughout the spring, there are a few important timelines to keep an eye on if you have a specific flower in mind.
Here are some of the popular flowers for spring family photos in the area and when they bloom:
These are very unpredictable as they bloom a couple weeks before the cherry blossoms. For the last few years it has been mid-March! Because it’s impossible to know the timing, and they only last a short while once they bloom, I am not pre-booking these sessions this year. Instead, I will share an announcement with my email newsletter when we are closer and have more info. If I happen to have availability when they bloom, I may open up 1-2 spots for anyone who wants to book at that time. My favorite spot for these is in Washington, DC.
Mid-March through mid-April depending on weather, cherry blossom type, and location! I will not be offering cherry blossoms at the Tidal Basin or timing around when peak bloom happens, as my outdoor season doesn’t start until April and it sometimes happens in March. But there are other cherry blossoms that bloom in April and at other locations that are also beautiful!
These can be found throughout spring, but if you’re looking for a gorgeous field Burnside Farms might be for you. The flowers bloom for only three weeks, and timing can be tricky because of the unpredictable weather patterns this time of year. It’s usually in April, but plan to be flexible if you want the peak.
May through early June depending on weather. I have a favorite garden with these!
Peak bloom at my favorite Arlington rose garden is late May – early July! There are other types of roses that are out other months as well, and several location options to choose from.
Late spring, sometimes peaking in late April but it depends on the weather
These don’t bloom until the summer, but I’m including them because they are SO pretty! Aim for late June to hit the peak bloom.
These are also in the summer! There is a beautiful farm in Virginia if you’re interested in this option.
If you saw my hydrangea photos from last year, note that these don’t bloom at that location until August / September!
There are also MANY other flowers and budding trees in the area! This list is just some of the more popular ones I’ve come across as a family photographer in Northern Virginia. If you have a specific flower in mind, or if you just love a gorgeous garden in general, I would love to help you plan your dream photography session! Fill out the contact form below to get started.
