9 Hair Tips for Family Photos | Northern Virginia Photographer

9 Hair Tips for Family Photos | Northern Virginia Photographer

Looking for hair tips for your upcoming family photos? Today I’m sharing 9 tips to make getting ready – and feeling your best – a breeze!

1. Leave it to the professionals and hire a hair stylist! Many can even come to your home so you don’t have to worry about going anywhere, and they specialize in natural looks that are polished but don’t feel too “done up.” All of my clients will get a list of top hair and makeup artists in the area to make scheduling a breeze! Many offer both hair and makeup together to make things even easier.

2. Schedule haircuts for everyone in the family 1-2 weeks before the shoot. Don’t wait until you’re too close to the session as hair sometimes needs a few days to settle.

3. Touch up your roots or hair color a week or so before so you look and feel your best.

4. Keep it simple when choosing a hair style – you want to look like yourself, just a little more polished! Popular options include down in loose waves or straight, half up, or tied back in a loose updo.

5. For kids, choose hairstyles that won’t need constant adjusting and that your kid genuinely likes. For girls, half-up styles with bows or clips can keep hair neat but still look natural. Braids are also a beautiful option.

6. For outdoor photos, plan accordingly. In the summer, consider a half-up style or updo if you’re worried about humidity. (Or see above and hire a professional so they can set your hair perfectly to combat the elements!)

7. Avoid dramatic haircut or color changes right before photos, hairstyles you’ve never tried before or trendy looks that might date your photos.

8. Do a test run of everyone’s hairstyles a few days before so you don’t have to stress on session day.

9. Keep touch-up supplies handy throughout the session. Bring a brush or comb, hair spray, and cream to smooth away flyaways.

Remember, the goal isn’t perfection – it’s capturing your family looking and feeling their best!  Imperfections, hair blowing in the wind, etc. can add beautiful character and texture to your photos. We want to capture that emotion and the moment, so plan ahead but don’t stress about it at the session! Choose styles that reflect your family’s personality and remember to have fun throughout the session. Hair will move around as you play, laugh, snuggle – and that’s exactly what we want!
