Top DC Engagement Session Locations

Washington, DC is full of stunning views. So it’s no surprise many couples choose the city for their engagement session! Whether you’re looking for an iconic shot like the monuments, or a low-key city vibe, you’ll definitely find something that suits your personalities.

See a list of my favorite places below!

Thomas Jefferson Memorial

This is one of my all-time favorite spots! From the elegant marble columns, the Tidal Basin views and plenty of places to frame the Washington Monument, the Thomas Jefferson Memorial has everything you need for a classic DC session. It’s also the top choice during cherry blossom season!

The National Parks Service does require a permit for this location (and all the other monuments), but it’s easy to apply. I’m happy to provide instructions for submitting!

Lincoln Memorial

Another DC classic, the Lincoln Memorial features views of the reflecting pool and the Washington Monument. This one tends to be the busiest monuments, but if we go at sunrise it’s not a problem. It’s also near the DC War Memorial, making it a great way to hit two iconic locations.

The National Parks Services also requires a permit for this location.

DC War Memorial

Located  near the Lincoln Memorial, the DC War Memorial offers a quieter backdrop. There are fewer tourists here on most days, making it ideal for those seeking DC photos in a more private location.

The National Parks Services also requires a permit for this location.

Meridian Hill Park

Located in the Washington, DC neighborhood of Columbia Heights, Meridian Hill Park is a great option if you want a low-key park that’s still in the city. It’s best at sunrise, and the Meridian Hill Park fountain is always a beautiful backdrop.

Navy Yards Park

Featuring waterfront views, riverfront boardwalk and unique architecture, the Navy Yards Park is a beautiful sunrise choice. It’s also near Nationals Park if you want a few photos on the steps!

Georgetown is a great choice with a mix of city and nature. Highlights include the Key Bridge, cobblestone roads, row houses and the canal. It’s beautiful during all four seasons, and the variety allows you to really make the session your own!

The Supreme Court/Library of Congress/Capitol Building

This location is great because it’s easy to capture them all in the same session! It’s also perfect if you’re looking for elegant DC architecture, but you don’t necessarily want the monuments. It’s best at sunrise (really the only way to avoid crowds), and golden hour is just stunning against the marble columns!

Local Neighborhoods

Sometimes you don’t have to wander far to find a location that captures DC and your story. For example, if you live in the city, you may decide your neighborhood holds lots of memories! We could stop by your favorite bar, restaurant or coffee shop. Or we could go to the place you had your first date! Feel free to get creative here and choose a place with special meaning to both of you.

National Portrait Gallery

This is my favorite indoor location in the city! I just love the elegant backdrops. The Kogod Courtyard is also a light-filled area that’s perfect on rainy days.

This is another laid-back location! The park itself is on the smaller side, but the fountain adds an elegant touch, and we can also wander around the surrounding neighborhoods. Like almost all of the DC locations, it’s best at sunrise before it’s impossible to avoid all the crowds!

National Arboretum

This is one of my new favorite spots! It’s crazy to think this beautiful landscape is within the city. From the columns to the open fields, it is full of photo opportunities for your session. It does require a permit, so you’ll want to check in with their office to get everything set.

Other popular choices:

Union Station

National Cathedral – permit required

Tudor Place

Eastern Market

The Spanish Steps in the Kalorama neighborhood

Lower Senate Park
