Our Engagement Story: Forever Like That

Our Engagement Story dusty-French-blue-ribbon-tiffanys-engagement-ring-photoSo you may be wondering where my Monday Soundtrack posts have been the past few weeks. To be honest, August has been a bit of a whirlwind! Between a busy wedding season, engagement and anniversary sessions, a surprise trip to Indiana University, getting engaged, planning a wedding and going on a trip to Charleston, I have been doing my best to simply stay in the moment! I mean, I haven’t even had a chance to share our proposal story yet!!

Which is why I thought today is the perfect time to do that. And don’t worry, you’ll still get a song of the week (because it is oh, so fitting). But first, here’s a little background on our relationship.

B and I met more than seven years ago on a snowy day at Indiana University. We were both freshmen: I was studying journalism, and he was studying astrophysics and physics. My roommate, Sam, was going to the movie theater on campus, and she convinced me to join the group. That’s when I met B! Within a week, we were pretty much inseparable. We spent the first four years of our relationship on that quintessential college campus, and it will always have a special place in our hearts. Now, here comes the real story!

Our Engagement Story

It all started a week before he actually proposed. After a long wedding day, I found a note from B explaining how he had booked a surprise trip to IU for the following weekend. I’ll be honest: I was a little suspicious. After dating for seven years, a spontaneous trip tends to raise some eyebrows. Add in the fact that we hadn’t gone back together since we graduated four years ago, and I was beyond excited!

When we arrived, the first thing we wanted to do was walk around campus. If you’ve ever been to Indiana University, you know why. It’s simply a beautiful place to be! On this specific day, the sky was looking a little overcast since they were calling for rain. It was warm outside, though, so we figured it would still be worth it to walk around. Plus, B brought a rain jacket just in case.

As we walked past the sample gates, we saw it: Wells House (otherwise known as the wishing well.) Simply put, it’s our favorite spot on campus. We stopped there on our very first date, and it holds more memories than we can count.

But when we arrived this day, we noticed there were already people inside. Naturally, I continued our walk around campus. B seemed to be lingering, but I really didn’t think much of it. I was just so excited to see everything! I knew eventually we would be back, and I wasn’t in any rush.

That’s when the rain started.

It was really more of a drizzle, but I did think it was a little odd B didn’t offer me the rain jacket – especially since he wasn’t wearing it either. Looking back, this was super suspicious. But I was having a blast talking about all of our college memories so I barely noticed!

When the rain started coming down a little harder, B suggested we go back to the wishing well for shelter. It made sense to me considering it’s covered.

And as soon as we walked in, I knew.

He told me the reason he planned this trip was to come back to the very spot our first chapter started. And he couldn’t think of a better place to start our next chapter together. Then, he got down on one knee and pulled out the most beautiful ring I have ever seen! (Ok, I’m biased, but you know yours is your favorite too!!)

Of course I said yes!! After lots of hugs and admiring the ring, we sat on the bench under the stained glass windows and talked about the future. How excited we were, how long he had been planning it. How he always knew this would be the right spot to ask. It was perfect.

Finally, about an hour later, we realized we hadn’t eaten anything since breakfast!! If you know us, you know that never happens since we literally plan every date around what type of food we’ll be eating. So without further discussion, we walked to the car to go to our favorite restaurant, Scotty’s Brewhouse.

Little did I know, I was in for another surprise.

We walked in, and I immediately asked for a table for two. But he walked right past the hostess stand and told me there might be a table set up already. I was super confused, but thought hey, maybe he called ahead and we just have a special table for the two of us. As I walked in the back, however, I was completely shocked to see both of our parents there!! Mine drove five hours from northwest Indiana, and his drove all the way from Virginia to be there!!

Needless to say, it was the perfect way to celebrate such a big moment. I have never been more surprised in my life, and it made such a special day even more meaningful. We talked about the wedding plans, sharing the news with everyone and of course, I celebrated with champagne. All in all, it was simply the perfect day.

And now, we get to plan our own wedding!! I couldn’t imagine spending my forever with anyone else. Which is why this week’s featured song is “Forever Like That” by Ben Rector. Cheers to being engaged to your very best friend! And thank you to everyone for all the well wishes!
