The Best Time of Day for Wedding Photos: Golden Hour

Have you ever heard the term “golden hour?” It’s possible you’ve heard it’s the best time for photos, maybe from a photographer or a friend. But if you don’t know what it is or how it works, I’m here to help!!

Here’s the breakdown. Golden hour happens when the sun is at its lowest point in the horizon before rising or setting. So yes, there are two every day – one in the morning at sunrise, and one in the evening right before sunset. At this time of day, the light is soft, romantic and simply stunning!! If you’ve ever looked at photos that have this gorgeous glow, that’s likely golden hour.

Can you tell why photographers love shooting at this time?? It seriously makes my heart sing!! So next question – how does it affect your wedding photos?

Answer: You have the option of requesting golden hour portraits on your wedding day.

The majority of your wedding day is done before sunset’s golden hour. And that’s totally fine – a skilled photographer can find or make beautiful light anywhere! So you don’t have to worry that most of your photos won’t be captured at this time. You do, however, have the option of opting for those extra special portraits right at sunset!

And I will say, you will make my day if you ask for golden hour photos!! Here’s why. First of all, that light. I don’t think I need to elaborate much further on that one. Second, it’s the perfect excuse for you and your brand new spouse to step away from the party for just a little bit!! Trust me, there’s nothing more romantic than stealing away from the music for an intimate sunset kiss.

Sound like something you want?? YAY!! Next week I’ll be sharing tips on how you can plan for these photos. One more note: I do have to add that unfortunately golden hour is weather dependent. As of now I don’t have superpowers to control the weather, so I can’t promise the perfect golden hour will happen on your day. But there are several ways we can plan for it – so stay tuned!!

Until then, here are some gorgeous golden hour photos to get you inspired!!
