Old Town Alexandria Portrait Guide | Virginia Family Photographer

Where: Old Town Alexandria in Virginia

Why it’s ideal for portrait sessions: Old Town Alexandria has it all! It’s my favorite location that includes both city and nature vibes. We can choose from charming cobblestone roads, stunning gardens, waterfront views, King Street, or beautiful residential neighborhoods. There are so many options, and I will tailor a session that’s custom to what you want most! I’ve done portraits at this location in all four seasons, and I lived in Alexandria for four years, so I love taking you to all the best spots.

Best time to take photos here: sunrise through early morning and late afternoon through the evening depending on the season. As a photographer who loves golden hour, I prefer either sunrise or an hour and a half before sunset. However, this location is great because there are plenty of spots that also look great throughout the day. This can be great for families of little ones. It does require a little extra planning, but I can talk with you about the options!

Monday – Thursday are the best days for portrait sessions, as this location gets very busy on the weekends. With little ones, it is especially difficult to keep their focus when there are so many people walking by us, or other photographers waiting for their turn. It’s also a more enjoyable experience in general when we’re not dealing with crowds. And it’s easier to find parking!

Is a permit required? No, a photographer permit is NOT required for most public spots in Old Town Alexandria! This is one of my favorite parts of this location.

Parking info: Metered street parking, paid parking garages, and non-metered street parking are all available throughout Old Town. I will give you the best spot to park once we finalize where we’ll be taking the photos! One note: traffic can get busy, so please plan to arrive early so you have plenty of time to park and walk to our meeting spot.

Other perks: It’s so easy to make an evening out of it. Enjoy dinner in many of the delicious Old Town Alexandria restaurants, spend time as a family in the local parks, or simply go for a stroll and admire this charming city.

This sounds perfect! How can we book an Old Town Alexandria portrait session with you?

First, fill out my contact form here! I’ll be in touch within 48-business hours with all the details (although, usually I get back to you sooner). My email will include pricing info, my earliest spots available to book, and everything else. If you ready to book at that point, you can easily do so online! If you want to chat first, you’re always welcome to set up a phone call or an appointment at my photography studio in Sterling to chat.

My portrait session calendar typically fills up 1-4 months in advance, with outdoor sessions taking place between mid-April through mid-November. I recommend booking early to ensure you get a spot! In the meantime, here are more examples of photos taken in Old Town Alexandria.
